The heads represent connections between family, friends and community, while dreaming and kereru imagery are about aspiration and freedom.

That’s the symbolism behind the latest Hamilton City Council-funded mural on the corner of Dominion Rd and Avalon Dr in Nawton.

The work by artist Paul Be (aided by students from Fraser High School, Te Kopuku High School and Hamilton Girls High School) was officially launched today (Wednesday 26 September).

Paul talked with members of the local community about their thoughts when deciding on the design.

“Murals are a proactive way of reducing graffiti. The community feel like they own it, particularly if they have been involved and consulted with over mural development.”

The mural is part of an ongoing programme supported by Hamilton City Council’s Tagbusters team aimed at discouraging tagging, making people feel safer and beautifying communities. A range of murals are commissioned each year through the programme which involves working closely with the community and other organisations.

The Council’s City Safe Operations Manager Paul Blewman says it’s important these partners are involved.
