In the run up to Guy Fawkes Night on Monday 5 November, Hamilton City Council is reminding people of the need to act safely towards people, pets and property when letting off fireworks.

While fireworks go on sale from the end of this week, it’s also important to remember that they should only be let off on Guy Fawkes Night itself.

“Guy Fawkes Night is a tradition celebrated by many Kiwi families but care does need to be taken to ensure Hamiltonians enjoy fireworks safely,” says Peter McGregor, the Council’s Environmental Health Manager.

“Respect your neighbours by not letting off fireworks late at night, especially as the next day is an ordinary work and school day. There’s ample time to enjoy fireworks before 10.30pm. Fireworks can be very loud and repeated use either later at night, before or after Guy Fawkes Night can really disturb people, especially those with young children and pets.”

Extra care should be taken not to endanger people, pets or property.

For a fun and safe Guy Fawkes Night, follow the following tips:

  • think of your neighbours and don’t let fireworks off at unreasonable times, such as very late at night
  • keep your pets inside and out of harm’s way
  • follow the instructions on the fireworks packaging carefully
  • use your fireworks on Guy Fawkes Night ONLY
  • do not drink alcohol before setting off fireworks
  • closely supervise children and pets around fireworks
  • have a hose or bucket of water handy in case of an emergency.
