A collection of WEL Networks electrical pillar boxes have been given a ‘Hamilton-flavoured’ makeover.

Fourteen low voltage pillar boxes in the Victoria St, Garden Place and Ward St area have been wrapped with a new graffiti-proof design which depicts iconic elements of Hamilton city.

Included in the design are various Hamilton bridges, the Founder’s Theatre water fountain, Lake Rotoroa, the Riff Raff statue and the Ruakiwi water reservoir.

WEL Networks Communications Manager, Erin Rangi-Watt says the project has been driven by a shared desire with the Hamilton Central Business Association (HCBA) and Hamilton City Council to improve the visual experience of the CBD.

“We hope that by tidying up the appearance of these boxes we are able to contribute to the overall experience of the central city- ultimately it’s all about making it an enjoyable environment for the public.”

HCBA General Manager, Vanessa Williams is delighted with the project being delivered in the central city.

“Having the power boxes wrapped with these designs around the central city will really make an impact and add some fantastic colour and vibrancy to the CBD.”

The boxes have previously been the target of vandalism and promotional material. It is hoped the new design will attract more positive attention.

“We hope the public will enjoy these new designs, but it’s important to remember they house live electrical wires so they shouldn’t be interfered with,” says Rangi-Watt.
