If you’re in the open when a quake strikes high objects such as masonry, equipment or branches could fall on you.

It’s recommended you follow the drop, cover, hold procedure if possible.

But at the very least protect your head while the shaking is continuing and look out for falling objects.

Participating in the big Civil Defence ShakeOut exercise at 9.30am on Thursday 18 October is a good way to prepare – you’ll be expected to react as if a big quake has hit at that time.

Hamilton City Council has signed up as an organisation.
