A big quake could strike any time.

How you react could literally be the difference between life and death.

Drop, cover, hold is best – get down on the ground, get under cover and hold on to your cover to help you stay under it.

If you can’t other options include:

  • getting in a door frame
  • adopting the brace position if seated
  • covering your head
  • getting into open space
  • looking out for things that could fall on you.

Being aware of surroundings will help you make the right choice.

Participating in the big Civil Defence ShakeOut exercise at 9.30am on Thursday 18 October is a good way to prepare – you’ll be expected to react as if a big quake has hit at that time.

Hamilton City Council has signed up as an organisation.
