What’s shaking in dance at the 2019 Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival?  There’s interpretative dance, kapa haka, free workshops, immersive dance theatre with live music, circus and cabaret elements and divine physicality.

The Creamery

These performers do more than dance, they make cheese. Immersive dance theatre with live music, audience members are even invited to sample the finished product, promising to be a culinary sensation that delights the senses and feed the soul.  This is the tale of two cheese makers where rivals and passions boil over as the curds are separated from the whey. Artisans compete to win your favour with freshly made lemon ricotta, fresh herbs and steamy stirring. Live music, theatre, divine physicality and filthy tactics combine to make delicious cheese coated in red hot wax.The Creamery is an ageless tale of neighbours at war, forbidden love and broken taboos.  The Creamery is the third work in Java’s Artisan Series and follows RISE, bread making on a large scale and The Wine Project where grapes were crushed and fermented. “This is the full shebang. The Creamery is dance theatre, rich with conflict and all things messy.” says Theatreview. The Creamery has two performances at the Gardens Festival on Saturday 2 March and Sunday 3 March at 6pm.

Back of The Bus

This performance also comes to the festival from Java Dance Theatre and offers to transport audiences, literally, by bus as they embark on an exploration of Hamilton. Come ride a bus on a magical mystery tour as dancers propel themselves along the aisles and hang from the roof. In a marriage of physical comedy, kinetic energy and outrageous scenarios, dancers launch themselves all over the bus in a site specific work that’s wowed audiences from Edinburgh to Adelaide to Wellington. They come to Hamilton following sold out seasons across Australasia, the UK and Asia.  ‘Oozes charm and captures the imagination.” Broadway Baby (5 Stars). Meet at the Gardens car park at Gate 2 to set off on an adventure like no other! A must for fans of dance and public transport alike. Show times are:

  • Thursday 28 February at 1.30pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
  • Friday 1 March at 11am, 1.30pm and 6.30pm.
  • Saturday 2 March 12pm and 2pm.
