Athletes, coaches and administrators representing more than 20 sporting codes are included in the Sport Waikato Hamilton City Sports Awards nominations.

Sport Waikato’s annual awards break the region down into various districts, and the award ceremonies take place all over the region during November.

Hamilton City Council is a supporter of the awards presented to Hamilton athletes, administrators and coaches – with category winners going forward to be considered for the prestigious Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards, held on Thursday 30 January 2020.

Sport Waikato CEO Matthew Cooper says he is impressed with the quality of nominees from a wide variety of sports nominated this year.

“It’s so encouraging to see the range of sporting codes represented in the nominations with everything from football to squash, and cheerleading to water polo,” Mr Cooper says.

“Thanks to all those who took the time to nominate – the sporting talent in our region is inspiring and I am really looking forward to our awards evening and celebrating our city’s success.”

Hamilton City Council Deputy Chief Executive Lance Vervoort says the Council is a proud supporter of the awards, with the organisation playing a key role in facilitating sport and recreation for Hamilton residents.

“Across our business and our city, the Council provides a range of parks and facilities for our city’s athletes to perform,” Mr Vervoort says.

“It’s a vital part of what we do to improve the wellbeing of Hamiltonians, and reflecting that, the Council recently adopted a new Play Strategy. The strategy puts a focus on keeping our communities active, healthy and enjoying recreation options like organised sport – which is the environment in which these award nominees are contributing and thriving.”

Listed among the nominees for the Secondary School Sportswoman category is footballer Grace Wisnewski, who played a key role in the NZ U17 Women’s team spectacular run of form at the 2018 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay. The New Zealand team finished third in the tournament – the highest placing ever achieved by any New Zealand team competing in a FIFA World Cup event.

The Hamilton City Sports Awards will this year be held at the Hamilton Gardens Pavilion on Thursday 7 November with refreshments from 5pm and awards starting at 5.30pm.

Tickets cost $20.00 and are available for purchase online at www.sportwaikato.org.nz/awards.
