The Between the Lines exhibition celebrating Waikato writers and illustrators returns to the Central Library this month.

Back for the first time since 2014,

the 2018 exhibition runs from 3 September to 28 September, and features 13 children’s book authors and illustrators, all of whom live and create in the Waikato.

Donovan Bixley, Kat Merewether and Matt McKinley are among the better-known illustrators taking part, while writers are well represented by children’s literature  superstars Dawn McMillan, Feana Tu’akoi and Judi Billcliff.

Large individual displays will explain the process and inspiration behind the featured writers’ and illustrators’ books, providing a fascinating insight into the creative process and hard work that goes into crafting them.

Between the Lines is the brainchild of Deborah Hinde. A talented illustrator, Deborah works out of her studio in Wharepapa South – southeast of Te Awamutu- and has recently diversified into authoring, as well as illustrating and publishing her own books.

“It’s exciting to see the wealth of creative talent in this exhibition,” Deborah says. “There’s a mix of traditionally and independently published authors and illustrators sharing their inspiration and process that goes into producing their books. I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to experience this exhibition.”

Between the Lines can be enjoyed throughout September during library opening hours. School groups are specifically invited to attend.

The exhibition opening on Monday 3 September from 5:30 pm is open to the public and will include a brief welcome and a presentation by well-known illustrator Ross Kinnaird.

Although Ross doesn’t live in the Waikato, his long-time author collaborator Dawn McMillan does. Together Dawn and Ross have been responsible for producing such unforgettable kiwi classics as Why Do Dogs Sniff Bottoms? and Doctor Grundy’s Undies.

There will also be a panel discussion with the featured authors and illustrators, where members of the audience will be able to ask questions and contribute to the discussion. The opening event starts at 5:30pm, on the ground floor of Hamilton Central Library in Garden Place, Hamilton

Su Bradburn, Hamilton Libraries Childrens and Teen Librarian says: “We’re very happy to be hosting the Between the Lines Exhibition again. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to  connect with local authors and illustrators, both in person at the Exhibition opening, or through the exhibition throughout September. We encourage people to come along.”
