On the Move

Closure of Kahikatea Dr railway crossing

Plan ahead and be prepared for delays as a section of SH1 Kahikatea Dr is closed to vehicles over the weekend of 11-13 August for a railway crossing upgrade.

The closure will start around 1am on Saturday 11 August, and reopen by 4.30am on Monday 13 August.

Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained, and emergency services are the only vehicles which will be allowed over the rail crossing. Access to local businesses will not be affected during the closure.

Alternative routes around the closure will be signposted, as well as suggested alternative routes for drivers coming in to Hamilton on SH1 and SH3.

The Orbiter bus route will be affected, with an alternative route over the weekend.

Drivers are advised to expect increased traffic on the detour and alternative routes, and should allow extra time for their journeys.

The work which is being done by KiwiRail and the NZ Transport Agency, will see a new concrete slab installed which will last longer and make a smoother and more durable crossing. The pedestrian/cycle crossings will be upgraded with improved safety warning, and emergency escape bays for vehicles trapped lowering arm barriers will also be added.
